The program can't connect to the EdAlive Server
The program can't connect to the EdAlive Server.
Possible Causes & Solutions
If the client program cannot find the EdAlive Server, check the following:
- That the EdAlive Server application is running. If the EdAlive
Server is installed as an application, you should see a "module window"
for each client application
- That you are using the correct version of the program
- That your firewall programs allows the EdAlive Server (and the
client program) to communicate across the network. Make sure you
properly configure the firewall on both the server computer and client computers.
- That the EdAlive Server and the client computers are on the same
subnet. By default the client program will look for the EdAlive Server
by scanning IP addresses in the same subnet (i.e., with IP addresses
that vary only in the last octet). For example, if the EdAlive Server
is on 192.168.1.7 and client is on 192.168.1.24 the client should be
able to find and connect to the server. However, if the EdAlive Server
is on 192.168.1.7 and and client is on 192.168.36.24 client will not be able to find the server. See the Advanced Subnet Information below for more details.
- That the EdAlive Server and client programs are configured properly and that your firewall program isn't blocking communication on these ports (typically port 1626 and the port range 2000-4000).
A subnet is defined by the subnet mask. If the subnet mask is
255.255.255.0 then IP addresses in same subnet can only vary in the
last octet of the IP address (i.e., the final number in the range
0-255). 255.255.255.0 is the most common subnet mask.
If the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 or 255.255.x.0 then the pool of IP addresses available in the subnet is much larger (2562, or 65 536, in the case of 255.255.0.0 and a lesser number for subnet masks like 255.255.248.0).
EdAlive does not support connections between the EdAlive Server and
client applications across different subnets. However, if the EdAlive
Server is on a different subnet (via choice or necessity), connecting
the client applications is still possible provided that the client
computer can ping the server on the EdAlive lobby port (port 1626 by
default). To do this, you must force the IP address for each client computer.
